OPENING OF THE SEASON.

BIRKENHEAD-NORTHCOTE CLUB

Tho Birkenhead and Northcote Lawn Tennis Club's courts w-ere officially opened for the season on Saturday by the Mayor of Northcote, Mi?-A. E. Greenalade. There was n large attendance of members and visitors. . The Mayor referred to the serious illness of the club's president, Mr. L. S. Maxwell, who had been a particularly active member and regular player for many years past. Not only the members <;f the tennis club, but the whole community exfended the sincere wish for his early restoration to health. The Mayor said tho club was notf.in _a better position than hitherto to maintain the ten hard courts in first-class order. This had been made possible by the provision of a vehicular access road from Church Street, right to the entrance of the club's property towards the pavilion, while a direct water service had also been laid along the same route. The club was able to accommodate several new members, and was also encouraging the younger people to take tip the game, by placing the courts at the disposal of the school juniors, from Monday to Friday inclusive, at a nominal charge. The financial position had improved of late, and the prospects for the season were bright. Mrs. J. R. Gray then served the ball over the net, and the Mayor declared the courts open, and wished the club a very successful season.

CAMPBELL TARK CLUB. At the official opening of the Campbell Park Tennis Club, the president. Mr. B. S. Baity in bis opening speech expressed the hope that this season would be an even better one than last. Mr. Barry remarked also on the need for increased membership. Tho number of members last season had been 130, but as there were 10 courts room could be found for many more players. As far as competitions were concerned, the club intended to enter three, if not four, teams. Mr. Barry recalled the success of the club's team, which last season won its section in the B grade. The value of co-operation with the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association was stressed by its president. Mr. E. Hickson. Miss A. Leng. winner of the women's championship singles last season, served the first ball. A progressive doubles tournament was then played.

CARLTON CLUB. There was ft large attendance at the official opening of the Carlton Tennis Club. The president, Mr. W. Miller, welcomed tho players and said tho Beasou's prospects were excellent. Tho first ball was played by Mrs. J. Pollard, and scratch games, arranged by tho club captain and secretary. Mr. J. McMillan, formerly of the Linwood Club. Christchurch, were played. This season the club will play in C and D erodes inter-club competitions. Messrs. J. Pollard, V. Parvin, J. Shand, Cr. Shand, W. Orwin. A. Aldred and R. Chalmers form tho committee, and members of the women's social committee are Mrs. Peake, Mrs. Pollard. Mrs. Jeffries, Miss M. Pauaina, Mißs Thompson, Miss Catley and Miss Wigmore.

THE MAUKT7 CLUB. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Saturday, The Mauku Tennis Club held its official opening for the season this afternoon. There was a good attendance of members, and visitors were present from other clubs. In tho unavoidable absence of the prosident,. Mr. J'. F. .Davies, the secretary, Mr. H. Swinbourn, declared the courts open for play. Mrs. Davieß played tho first ball. During tho afternoon the president of the Franklin Lawn Tennis Association, Mr. M. S. Campbell, visited tho courts, and in a short address invited tlte club to competo in tho association's competitions.

PUKEKOHE EAST CLUB. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.]

PUKEKOHE, Saturday,

The Bcason was officially opened on the Pukekohe East Club's courts this afternoon. Tho ' attendance of members and visitors fully occupied Hie club's three courts, which wcro declared open by the Rev. .T. Hubbard. Miss Ingram played the first ball.

TOURNEY AT TE AWAMUTU,

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AWAMUTU, Sunday. A very large gathering of tennis players assembled yesterday for tho opening of the To Awamutu Club's season. Mr. R. A. Coyne, president, welcomed tho visitors and declared tho courts open for piny. A Yankee tournament attracted many entrants, ond keen contests resulted. The final was played betweon A. Bowler and Mrs. McTavish and H. V. Holmes and Mrs. A. Walker. Tho former pair won after an exciting coriest.
