ERECTION OF GOODS SHEDS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Saturday.' The Cabinet has approved of tho Bunny Strcot sito for the new Wellington railway station and of the general lay-out of tho goods yards on the reclaimed area at Thorndon, according to a statement made by tho Minister of Railways, Hon. W. B. Taverner. The Minister made available for publication also the text of his considered reply to the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. C. A. Troup, which intimated that lie was not prcparefl to set up a com mission, as suggested, to investigate the question of site of the station and the proposed establishment of the goods yards at Petone. The new station, which will consist of five storeys, will bo tin imposing and dignified structure.
In his interview tho Minister stated that in designing the building provision had been made for adequate and up-to-date railway facilities on tho ground floor, including refreshment room, shops, etc. An endeavour had been made to combine simplicity with utility throughout, and no items were of an extravagant nature.
"Arrangements will be made," said tlin Minister, "to accommodate the complete administrative staffs and the district offices in the new station building. The Government Accommodation Board will take over the present head office and site, which will be used for the housing of other Government offices which arc at proscnt spread over the city." It is intended to proceed at once with the erection of a modern goods shed, as part of the sclieme decided upon. There will bo ten passenger platforms at the station. The longest will be 1000 ft. It is proposed to provide a great plaza on the Bunny Street frontage, 300 ft. by 300 ft. This will provide a circulating area for trams, buses, motors and pedestrians. The front is in a direct line with several streets radiating out into the city.
