REMOVING CENTRE-POLES.

WORK ON PARNELL RISE.

The removal of the tramway centrepoles on Parnell Riso is now in progress, and it is expected that by the beginning of next year all the poles on this route to Newmarket will have been removed. The poles, numbering about 300, are embedded in concrete, which will be removed by pneumatic chippcrs. Some of tho poles are about 20 years old, and in a few cases are unfit for further use. These will be merely cut off at the base. An arrangement was made with the Auckland Power Board some time age for the use of its poles fo carry the overhead wires, and a similar agreement has now been made with the Post and Telegraph Department. These poles will be used as far as is possible, but in some places others will have to be erected. When the loop that will serve traffic at tho now railway station is being laid it. will bo necessary to remove some of the centre-poles in Beach Road. "There have been more accidents with poles on the side of tho road than with centre-poles," said Mr. F. E. de Guerrier, tho board's engineer, on Saturday. Whero slreets were fairly jvide, such as at the foot of Queen Street, he thought that they were more a benefit than a danger, as they served a useful purpose in the regulation of traffic. Ho firmly believed that tho\ - e would be more accidents upon their removal than before.
