BRETT MEMORIAL HOME.

CONTROL. OF INSTITUTION.

OPENING AT END OF YEAR.

JURISDICTION OF ; CHURCH.

Alterations to tho Henry Brett Memorial Homo at Takapuna are expected to be completed at the end of this £ear, when childron from the Richmond Road Home will be transferred to it. The new home will be oponed under the management of the Order of tho Good Shepherd.

Tho control of the home forms tho subject, of a bill brought before the Church of England Diocesan Synod last evening by. Archdeacon W. J. Simkin. It. is proposed that the homo shall bo controlled by a trust board of nine membors, presided over by tho bishop of the diocese. In contrast to tho present Richmond Road Home, which it is absorbing, tho home at Takapuna will bo under the jurisdiction of synod. ' Archdeacon Simkin said that the children from the Richmond Road Home would bo removed to Takapuna about tho end of this year.. The children's homo had a very small beginning about 30 years ago in a house ! .n Brighton Road, under Sister Cecile. Later, the management was assumed by tho , Order of the Good Shepherd. In 1910, it was decided to create a trust to govern the home, and tiustees were appointed. The Richmond Road property was then purchased and tho management was taken over by a committee. If tho present bill wore passed, tho management of the home at Takapuna would again be handed over to the Order of tho Good Shepherd. The Children's Home Board desired that the work carried on at Richmond Road should be continued at Takapuna, and to that end tho new home would bo governed by nine trustees, including the bishop of tho diocese as chairman, tho archdeacon of Auckland, tho vicar of the cathedral parish and six others to bo appointed by the Standing Committee. Although the Children's Home Board had always reported to synod it was in no way under its control. It was decided that if tho new home were to be a diocesan institution it would have to be brought under the control of synod. The board was willing that funds at present in its possession should bo handed to the trustees as an endowment.

Tho Rev. W. E. Lush said that the first children's home was started by Mrs. Cowie, wifo of Bishop Cowio,' at her own expense at a house in Brighton Road. It had long been suggested that the control of homes in the diocese should be co-ordinated, and he was anxious tliis should not be lost sight of in transferring the control of tho Richmond Road Home. The Papatoetoo institution was still controlled by a separate body. Archdeacon Simkin said that machinery existed for tho co-ordination of control if this wero desired in future.

The bill was put through tho committee slago and was read a third time.
