LIMERICK AND HIS RECORD.

WILL CHAMPION RACE AGAIN?

BY PHAETON.

If the prognostications of the Sydney tsperts aro endorsed, it may be doubted 'H, the racecourse will witness the return tof Limerick in full commission during the present season. The coming week is expected to find tlje champion once again located at his oI"d quarters at Racecourse Hill. Canterbury, where he is to be treated to a long rest. It is to bo regretted that unsoundness should have come against Limerick at tho opening of his six-year-old career, but still there is a great deal to enthuse over in viewing his racing career, the record of winch stands as follows: Ist. 2nd. 3rd. Unp. Amount. At 2yrs .. 3 1 0 5 . . £1,770 - At 3yrs ..6 6 1 1.. U.SfB At 4yrs 2 O 0 .. 18-158 At syrs .. s*" 3 1 1 .. 6,3061 At 6yrs .. 1 0 0 1 ..- 758 Totals . . 29* 12 *2 8 .. £38,880 i "Includes one dead-heat. It is interesting to relate that of i;he £38,880 10s won by Limerick no less than £34.690 10s is the outcome of his exploits in Australia, so that ho only won £4190 im New Zealand—the land of his birth.

NIGHTMARCH'S CAMPAIGN.

VICTORIAN ENGAGEMENTS.

The definite statement to hand from Sydney to the effect that Nightmatch is to be transported to Victoria to-morrow may. I think, be safely interpreted in the sense that it has been decided to give the New Zealand horse an-"opportunity to distinguish himself'' in tho Melbourne Cup. The 9.2 opposite Nightmarch's name in the big race set down for decision at Flemington on November 5 represents an impost 2lb. over weight-for-age, but that should not prove an over-severe burden for Nishtmsrch considering the game bid he made for victory in the Metropolitan Stakes under 9.13. - THE RANDWICK PLATE. TO-DAY'S RACE. The weight-for-age race set down {or de- " cision at tho A.J.C. Spring Meeting/Jo-day is the Randwick Plate of £2500, two; miles. The -following .is a Mist of tho Stayers likely to contest the raCe:— .> • ' • 1 ' ■f ■ Y St. lb." [Winalot. 6yrs. by Rossendalfe— ; Princess Volga * ; ; •<!•?» ® Dlic Banker, aged, Tjy' Kjlbroney— . Botivillo .. • K'* •• ® Bacchus, aged, by Magrj>ie*-Malt Lassie "... • • '' ': ® Kidaides, 6yrs, by Crucis, syrs, by/Satelles— B. 9 8 Jiightmarch, 4yrs, by NigbWjßaid—ilarsa. .. • • •• " ••® ® ■ NEW ZEALAND CUP. THE TOP-WEIGHT DIVISION. Now that it has been made quite certain ihat Nightmarch, will not fulfil his engagement in the New Zealand Cup the position is rendered vory much more open so far as the top-weight, division is concerned. Kapier, who heads the list with $.6, is stated to bo training on well, and, though he is now in his eighth year, the fact that ho has won full honours as a stayer and weight-carrier will be sure to keep him with the favourites. Mr. Henrys having raised Historic's impost to 9.5 which places the son of Nassau on 1 tho same terms as Star Stranger and lib. from the top-weight, is a point well discussed. In the decision of the Mitchclson Cup Historic, with lib. the best of the weights, defeated Star Stranger by a neck, but the luck'-of the race, it can well bo contended, was on the si'o of the chestnut. Star Stranger, it would appear, is ■ more susceptible of improvement in the matter of condition than Historic, and the bitter will probably have a much moro severe task in tho Now Zealand Cup than when he worsted his bay rival in the Mitchclson Cup. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. CAULFIELD GUINEAS. One of the leading classic events run annually on tho Australian turf is the Caulfield Guineas, tho stake for which is COOO guineas. The race comes up for do-' cision to-day, and the fact of Phar Lap not being engaged serves to invest the issue with greater openness than if the New Zealand gelding was included in the field of contestants. Parkwood (by Backwood— Yooralla) and Spanish Galleon (by Caravel • —Military Cross) are the leading performers engaged. PHAR LAP AND MELBOURNE CUP. In issuing a warning that Phar Lap is to be considered an unlikely starter in tho Melbourne Cup, Mr. H. R. Telford added: —"Phar Lap is a big overgrown fellow and 1 am of the opinion that he will not run out two mile 3. To run him in bo severe a race as tlie Melbourne Cup might knock him out, and I do not propose to *isk ruining ft good horse. PRICE OF RACEHORSES. The high prize-money in these days is Inflected in the unm offered for horses w ith winning form, on their side. During present week I am assured that an offer of 1000 guineas was made for a horse just out of the. hack class and that it was turned down quite readily. '

" WHO IS THIS PHAR'LAP ?"

. ONE FROM NEW ZEALAND.

With no performances of any note to recommend Phar Lap to • notice at the close of his two-year-old career,, the sudden rise to fame of the New Zealand gelding gives a cood touch of the sensational to' his exploits. In discussing Phar Lap in the Australasian last week " Snowden" remarked:—"lt often happens that in the midat of discussions on spring candidates, at a time when people consider that they have summed up tho position fairly accurately, something emergen like a bolt from the blue to shatter their theories and compel them to start thinking again. Such a case is the sudyjn rise of the New Zealand gelding Phar Lap, hardly thought of a few weeks ago, and now one of the most fancied candidates for Derby honours. Phar Lap • began his racing career in Sydney in February of this year and had four starts without earning a winning bracket. In his only other start—tho Maiden Juvenile Handicap, at Rosehill, in April—ho defeated a moderate field. A strong-looking, well-made eelding, he certainly gave indications of better thing 9, but his victory at Rosehill did not by any means suggest that ho was a potential winner of classics. Phar Lap was put into serious training again about two months ago. On performances he looked a common horso among aristocrats when he challenged Limerick, Mollison, Winalot and others in the Warwick Stakes, one mile, but after ho had run a close fourth to those horses people began to ask, ' Who is this Phar Lap?' His next appearance was in the Chelmsford Stakes, one miln and one furlong, r,t Randwick. He demonstrated his class by running Mollison to half a length. It was even said that bo might have defeated Mollison had he been more judiciously ridden, but that is m«ru conjecture. However one looks at it, the performance was a surprisingly good one, as the horses that finished behind him included Winalot, Crncis and Comanche." With the Rosehill Guineas, A.J.C. Derby and Craven Plate down to tho credit of Phar Lap and a good prospect of his being included as a dual Derby winner, Phar Lap is euro to be the bost-diacussod three-year-old of tho season. STUD NOTES. ' AN INTERESTING STUDY.

BY PHAETON.

A consideration of the sires' list in connection with tho Australian Jockey Club's Derby reveals that' in the 65 contests that have eventuated to date no less than 50 different horsea claim the parentage of winners. Maribyrnong (by Fisherman) and Chester (by Yattendon) each sired three winners. Maribyrnong's winning representatives were Richmond, Woodlands and Bargo, while Chester's successful representatives were Abercorn, Stromboli and Camoola* The Musket line comes out well in the summing up. Nordenfeldt (by Musket) scored in 1885, Martiili-Henry (by Musket) claimed the winner, Singapore, in 1883, Trenton (by Musket) was responsible for Trenchant, who won in 1893, ar.;l then in 189G and 1897 two descendants of Carbine (Charge and Amberite) respectively claimed the attention of tho judge in fir3t place. Havoo (by Nordenfeldt) Bired tho winner, Belah, in 1903. and three years after Multiform (by Hotchkisa and thus a grandson of Musket) had a winning representative in Noctuiforra, while in 1913 Multiform furnished another winner in the shape of Beragoon. Wallace (by Carbine) was included in the list of successful parents when his eon Mouutain King won the Derby of 1907. Horae3 tracins to St. Simon also havo an attractive record in connection with the Kandwick race. Maltster (by Bill of Portland), Hautvillicrs (by Elaut Brion), Pouflidon (by Poaitano), Cisco (by San Francisco), Biplane and. Artilleryman (both by Comody Kins), Ballymena (by Nassau), and'Rampion (by Itpssendale) comprise tho list of Derby winners .of the St. Simon line. Phar LapT who Von Derby . honours at Randwick ithia jrear, brings in the Bend Or line, his sire,' Night Raid,- being by Radium (son of the famous Doncaster horse).

ROYAL RULER AND HIS DAM. Royal Ruler having come into the limelight, a few particulars relating to tho Welcome Stakes winner and his dam aro interesting. Baby Doll, dam off. Royal Ruler, was bred in Australia in 1916 and when a yearling, was bought by Mr. Eliot R. Davis and brought to Auckland. '• She went into the 'late C. Coleman's stable, but met with an accident and never raced. She was bough'i by Mr. J. D. Kemp and he sold her to Mr. J. 'McDermott about 1922 in foal to Prince Mcrriweo. This foal—her first—was never tried as a racer. Baby Doll was then sent to Tea Tray and the foal—a colt—was sold to Mr. Ben. Chaffe'y, of Australia, for 500 cuineas. and has won races over there under tho name ot Tea Cosy. With a partnership established between Mr. McDermott and Mr. W. Whitmore. of Dargaville, Baby Doll was sent to Chief Ruler, and the colt that won the Welcome Stakes under the name of Royal Ruler, was the result. Last February Mi. W. Stone went to Dargaville to inspect Royal Ruler and bought him on account of Mr. B. Hart for 600 guineas. Baby Doll was sold to Mr. A. J. McGovern, of Te Awam.utu, last Mar.ch, and ho, has sent her to 'Australia to bo mated with an imported sire. "A yearling full-sister to Royal Ruler is running at Dargaville and she is stated to show even more quolity than Royal Ruler at a like age. Baby Doll is by Bobadil Jfrom the Wallace maro Sessa, and is a half-sister to Some Quality, winner of the last Australian Cup, she also holds like relationship to Caaerta, winner of several good races, including the V.R.C. St. Legcr. PHAR LAP'S YEARLING BROTHER. The southern breeder Mr. A. F. Roberts, who bred Phar Lap, is in .the happy position of claiming a yearling fnll-brother to tho A.J.C: Derby winner (by Night Raid—Entreaty). In the matter of colour the yearlinar is quite dissimilar to his wellperformed relativo. Phar Lap is of tho chestnut shade, while his yearling brother is a brown. This change in colour in horses similarly bred furnishes a very interesting study. Night Raid is u bay. and Entreaty is described as of tho black shade. Winkie, sire' of Entreaty, figures as a chestnut, and the same colour is prominent close up in tho pedigree of Night Raid. In throwing a brown colt that is quite in order, for the dark shade is prominent in Entreaty's pedigree. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. '? ._ - BY ARCHER. One of the most improved .horses racing' in this province this season is Prince Val, who has notched three successive victories in good style. His latest win over a mile was a very pleasing effort, and, though he will have to race in open company in future, it is confidently expected that ho will add further to his laurels in the higher clas3, Princo Val is a four-year-old gelding by Valkyrian from Sports Queen and is a likely one to develop into a useful handicap horse, for ho has not yet reached the zenith of his powers.

Consistency has been a feature of the form of Refresher this season and his three starts have yielded two wins and a second. So far he has done very , little racing rnd still has- a tendency to run " green," but ho is a very smart galloper and should prove a very useful performer at distances up to a mile. Refresher is now out of the hack class and will' have to tackle open company in future, but he seems certain to successfully bridge the gap between the 'two classes, as he should make considerable improvement before reaching his best.

The Auckland horseman H. Wiggins will be riding at the Masterton meeting next week and he has already booked six ridos at tho meeting." His mountß will includo Autopay, Dainty Ways, Tcheka, Balloon. Veronese and General Gas., -
