SYNTHETIC HEART.
Before tbo Nova Scotia Institute of Science, recently, Dr. O. S. (>ibbs, P'ofessor of Pharmacology at Dalhousie Lmversifv, performed a remarkable fiveininuto operation, during which lie removed the heart from a cat and substituted a rubber organ operated by an electrically-driven double pump. Ihe cat revived and remained alivo for nearly four hours. Canadian medical men say they arc confident that the discovery will have great scientific value, and may be of immense benefit to humanity. I)r. (Jibbs emphasises that thero is no thought of attempting to test the rubber heart in tho human body, nor has lie any expectation that it will bo utilised in tho treatment of heart diseases. Its purpose t 0 aid medical research, paiUculaily in the study of the effect of poisons on the circulation system.
