FINANCE FOR ROAD WORK. DESIRE FOR IMPROVEMENTS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NGATEA, Friday. The Hnurnki Plains County Council met yesterday. Hip chairman, Air. C. W. Harris, presiding. Notification was received from the Public Works Department that (ho sum of £433 at tho rato of £2 for £1 was available for tho renewal of the Mnhuta Road Bridge. The, chairman reported that the settlers of the Mangatarata district had agreed tn lie rated for a metalling scheme, for the roads of their district, Together with I lie county engineer and clerk ho had attended a meeting of settlers and the. decision had been a unanimous one although the. rate would be 3jd in the £. It was decided to conduct. 11 ballot of ratepayers. Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., forwarded a letter from the IJon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands, who stated that if definito steps were taken by tho ratepayers of the Kerepeehi township to form a special rating area for a loan to metal tho township roads a subsidy of £2 for £1 on tho cost, £1426, would be placed on the estimates. A total of 92j chains was involved.
It was decided to tako steps in regard to tho formation of a rating area. A deputation urged the opening of a stock route along the Piako River stopbank from Ngatea to Kerepeehi. Tho settlers were prepared to give tho land and fence it. The council decided to confer with tho drainage board administering the area concerned. Tho Waitemata County Council sought the support, of tho Hauraki Plains Council for a protest against "tho extra burden cast upon ratepayers by the Local Government Loans Board by the imposition of a heavier rate necessitated bv a heavy sinking fund in respect of short period loans." The meeting declined to support the protest.
