"BOBBY" CALF TRADE.
IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED.
SOCIETY AND GOVERNMENT
The " hobby " calf frado has been receiving much attention from Island officials of tho Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who consider that, the treatment, of tho calves is now more humane than it was in many cases at the inception of the industry. The Auckland society has received tho following letter from tho secretary of the Wellington society:— " I have to advise you that a deputation from my committee recently waited upon the. Minister of Agriculture, the lion. 0. W. Forbes, with reference to tho bobby calf traffic. Dr. Rcakes, Director of Agriculture, and Mr. Lyons, chief veterinary surgeon of the Department of Agriculture, were also in attendance, and tho matter was discussed at considerable length. My committee is satisfied from evidence submitted to the. deputation and as ;i result of the discussion that the trade has been very considerably improved this season. " In tho opinion of my society a great deal of the credit, for this improvement is due to the excellent work and untiring efforts of the Auckland society, and wo desire to congratulate your committee on the excellent results of its work in this direction. " I may mention that the Minister of Agriculture has given an assurance that the provisions relating to the ago (five days) at which calves may be slaughtered will be stringently carried out, and that his department will see that no cruelty is permitted." The Auckland society still welcomes suggestions as to means by which the conduct of the industry may be improved.
