ALLEGATION OF FRAUD.
CHARGES AGAINST BROTHERS
INSURANCE ON LUGGAGE
Two brothers, Arthur Moir Mitchell, aged 22, farmhand, and Cecil William Mitchell, aged 21, salesman, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, charged with conspiring to defraud the Insurance Office of Australia, Limited. Cecil William Mitchell was also charged with attempting to obtain £IBO from the same office by falsely representing that four bags, covorod by an insurance policy for that amount, were lost. Chief-Detective Hammond said that the two men conceived the idea of insuring their luggage for £IBO in Christchurch. They left Christchurch about September 30, checking their four bags through. One brother appeared in Auckland with the checks and collected the baggage. The other then appeared and claimed the insurance for the loss of the bags. "I understand that it is not the first time they have done this," said Mr. Hammond. "They are clever young men and travelled under fictitious names. They were both going to Sydney." Mr. Sellar, who appeared for the accused, asked for a remand, as he had been instructed only that morning, fn asking for bail he said that both young men were from the South Island arid they knew nobody in Auckland. A remand for a week was granted, bail being allowed in personal sureties of £IOO each, and a further surety of £IOO.
