Weaker conditions prevailed on New Zealand Slock Exchanges in the early part of this week, hut a larger amount of business was 'lone toward tho end of the period. Government Bonds and Inscribed Slocks remained in keen demand and sold several times at current and improved rates. Interest in local body debentures was maintained, but in most cases sellers wore not prepared to make further concessions and littlo business resulted. Firmer rates ruled for Now Zealand Breweries debentures, which moved up 5d during tho week and sold in Auckland on tcinis with Christchurch's best figure. Offers wero renewed yesterday at 28s 9d, compared with 27s 6d a week ago. Sellers asked 20s.

In tho banking section the week has been most interesting. Falls wero widespread last week, and in several instances tho downward movements were sharp. Shares changed hands froely at the boginning of this week, but toward the end there was not the samo selling eagerness and tho weakening tendency was arrested, with a steady improvement in offers. The most marked recovery was in New South Wales. Last Monday these shares wero done at .£4B ss. On Thursday thoy changed hands at £49, and yesterday buyers offered £49 Bs, an advanco of £1 8s for the week. Nationals of New Zealand remained fairly steady at a slightly lower level, and sold several times at £6 14s. Now Zoalands continued to soli at 60s 3d to 60s 6d. Unions of Australia, which had dropped lo £l4 10s on tho Wellington Exchange, showed steady improvement with an advance of 4s. Extensive trading was maintained in Commercials of Australia, which were the exception to the general adverse movement. Since Monday over 20 transactions in this scrip have been recorded on New Zealand exchanges, tho lowest at 28s 9d and the. highest at 295. . . After a short period of depression, insurance shares aro meeting a firmer market, and yesterday New Zealands, with sales at 46s and 46s 3d, wero back at tho level nt which they sold a week ago. The decline in South British was also arrested with a salo at 655, an advanco of Is on last Tuesday's figure. Pastoral shares also reflected the uneasiness of the market, and Dalgotys, which sold late in September at £ls, had salo in Auckland during the week at £l4, and in Christchurch as low as £l3 17s 6d. Some headway was made by Goldshrough-Morts, ana local rates remained fairly steady in the vicinity of 45s 9d. Coals remained unaltered, Renowns being the most active Littlo business was done in tho shipping, timber and woollen groups." In breweries Now Zealands ]iad steady salo at advancing rates. Tho best price mado during the week was in Wellington yesterday at 89s 3d, compared with a salo in Christchurch last Wednesday at 86s lOd. Interest was much woaker in the miscellaneous group, and business in that section was below tho average. Tho general trend was toward easier values. British Tobaccos and Wilsons Cemonts wero done sovoral times at lower lovols, with a tendency toward firmer values toward the end of the week. Interest in mining was fairly well maintained and although, with tho one exception of Woiliis, fluctuations wore generally downward, fowor changes occurred in this section of tho market. CANTERBURY MARKETS. LOWER RATES FOR POTATOES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —riIESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Tho potato market has lost some of tho brightness it possessed earlier in the week. On Wednesday sales of October deliveries wero nuido at £ll ss, but to-day buyers aro not accepting offers of £ll. However, it is tho prompt market that has met with tho principal check, prices dropping bafck to £9 a ton, f.0.b., s.i. They were ruling at £lO on Wednesday. Tho Waipiata is expected to sail from Lyttelton on Monday or Tuesday, and she will bo followed by tho Wuipahi, probably on Wednesday. It is expected that the two boats will tako about 6000 sacks from both ports for Auckland. Tho wheat markot is unaltered. Seeds are in small demand and there is very little in farmers' hands. Perennial ryegrass is worth up to 7s a bushel, f.0.b., s.i., Italian to 6s; Cocksfoot, 13d to 13jd a lb. for machino dressed, and cowgrass 80s per cwt. Tho quality of cowgrass this season is very indifferent and merchants are not prepared to quote more than a lb. to farmers. European seed is being offered at a very low rate. Dogstail is quoted at 7d to 7£d a lb. Tho Irish crop is a heavy one and there is no export outlot. Fescue is quoted at 9£d a lb.
