MR. WIENER'S DEATH. >
Farther details are now' available of the manner in which Mr. Harold Wiener, : the great Jewish and Arabic scholar, met his death at tho hands of the Arabs during the Palestine disturbances. On the morning of August 25 Mr. Wiener set off in his car with hia secretary, who had vainly tried to dissuade him, to see what was going on in the town of Jerusalem. .lust before they reached the they were met ! by a crowd of Arabs,"who forced them to halt, One of them, , addressing Mr. Wiener in Arabic, said, "What are you 1" ■ Folding his arms across his chest, Mr. Wiener answered in Arabic, "Ana Yalioudi." (I am a Jes.) "Then take that," the Arab said, and shot him through the chest. _ . Tho bitter irony of this tragedy is emphasised by the fact that Mr. Wiener had over since his residence in Palestine contributed liberally to all Arab educational and charitable organisations, and devoted himself especially to the cultivation of Arab, friendship. In his will he had. be- . queathed £IO,OOO to Moslem institutions. Sir. Wiener, who was about 55 years of age, was a graduate of Cambridge University, where lie took first class classical honours in 1897. Ho was called to the Bar in 1901.
