THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY.
KRUGER'S ULTIMATUM.
The thirtieth anniversary of the com mencement of the South Africa War falls to-day. President Kruger's ultimatum to the British Government, which was. presented to the British 'agent at Pretoria on : October 9, 1899, requested an. assurance by- the evening of October IX that the British troops on the Transvaal border would be. immediately withdrawn, that reinforcements which already had arrived in South Africa ■would be removed within "a reasonable time," and that any troops then on tho way wouM not be landed. The reply l-efusing compliance. with these demands was bunded to tho Boer Government on October 12. On the same day the first blow in the war was struck ' by an attack by the Boers on a British armoured train, between " Capetown and Kimbeuoy. . New Zealand sent in all ten contingents to the war, the first leaving on . October 21, 1899, and the tenth in April, 1902. The ten contingents comprised a total of about ,6400 men. Th® war was brought to a close by the sfgning of the-Vereohiging treaty, on May 31, 1902. . -, .
