* Historic Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215, ia likely to becomo a national possession.
A project is on foot for acquiring the property, which lies between Staines and Windsor, and . for handing it over to a national trust to preserve for the public.
Runnymede is a meadow in the parish cf Egham, Surrey, on the south bank of the Thames. It is celebrated in connection with tho signature of the Magna Carta by King John on Juno 15, 1215. It has been disputed whether the ceremony took place actually in tho meadow or on Magna Carta (or Charter Island) lying off it. Tho charter itself indicates Runnymede by name, but this may have included the island. The latter is tho traditional site and wi3 in 1217 the meeting place of Henry 111. and Louis (afterwards Louis VIII.) of Franco.
