[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. |
WELLINGTON. Friday,
The contractors, Messrs. Cammell Laird and Company, Limited, of Birkenhead, who are building two cargo steamers for the Union Steam Ship Company, will deliver one of them next month. Both will bo similar to the steamer Kartigi, but will have the latest improvements in cargo handling facilities and in other departments. Their names are Kaimiro and Karepo. The first signifies a native treo and the second is the .Maori name for a marine plant. • . The new vessels are of about 3500 tons dead weight, with a speed of 104 to 11 knots. They have been designed primarily to meet the conditions of the coal trade of the West Coast of the South Island, but are very serviceable vessels for othor cargo work on the New Zealand coast and in the intercolonial trade.
It speaks well for the British shipbuilder that the construction of the two steamers was begun six months ago, and that one of them is almost ready to leave for New Zealand. The other will be ready almost immediately afterwards.
