STREET COLLECTIONS.
STANDS OUTSIDE SHOPS.
"INTERFERENCE WITH TRADE."
The opinion that stands for street collections should not be placed outside shops in the city was expressed in a letter from a shopkeeper received by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce council 'yesterday. It was stated that tho collections were not good for trade, and that they should be made only outside the premises of banks or insurance companies.
The secretary, Dr. E. P. Neale, said the suggestion had been made that the collectors' stands should not always be in the same places. Shopkeepers found it interfered with trade, and one man had stated that people would not even pause to look at his window displays because a collection was being made on the footpath outside his shop.
Mr. J. A. C. Allum said hard-hearted business considerations could hardly be brought in. The City Council had passed resolutions. regarding street collections from time to time. It was difficult to toll which causes were unworthy, and public opinion would be against appeals being disregarded by the council. However, he thought the collections should be made only outside banks or insurance company premises,
"There is no objection to the collections being made,", said the chairman, Mr. H. T. Merritt. "The only question concerns tho localities where they should be made."
It was decided to confer with interested organisations and the Rotary Club. "Does this not suggest that the civic charity chest scheme should be revived ?" asked Mr. C. E. Clinkard.
"Do not suggest that, please," the chairman said. .
"Do not ask ns to father it," a member added, amid laughter. »
