AMERICA AS MODEL.

AUSTRALIAN INVITATION.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S PLEA

Australian and N\Z. Press Association. NEW YORK, Sept. 17

The first action of the new Australian High Commissioner to the United States, Mr. Herbert Brookes, was to officially approve the Australian trade warning about tho United States tariff. He issued tho following statement: —

"My task is to advertise Australia to Americans. Wo have vast areas of good land wailing for farmers. It would lie a pity if anything should occur to mar tho present friendly feeling which Australians have for Americans.

"America is Australia's 'model. We study everything you do and endeavour to imitate you to tho best advantage.

"Wo want to be like America. It seems to mo that the wise thing would be for our two countries to get closer and closer together rather than to raise up tariff walls against each other."
