MEMORIAL TO FALLEN.
THE WELLINGTON SCHEME
COMPETITIVE DESIGNS CALLED,
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
The conditions for competitive designs for a new Dominion museum, national art gallery and campanile for a carillon of bells, to be erected on the Mount Cock site in the centre of Wellington City, were finally revised and approved to-day. The competition will be confined to members of the New Zealand Institute of Architects or of the Royal Institute of British Architects, who are at present bona-fide residents in New Zealand.
[ Although the conditions are necessarily set out in formal fashion, one can gather from them that a ma.gnificent groun is possible of achievement, upon a splendid sit*. The initial expenditure will be £215,000, made up of a Government grant of £IOO,OOO, the city's contribution of £IOO,OOO, and a special Government grant of £15,000 for the tower to house the carillon. The tower will be faced and finished and the hall of memories provided when funds are available.
The conditions provide that the buildings must be planned with a view to future extension. Competitors have also to indicate their ideas of the treatment of the land about tjie group. The personnel of the jury of award is:—Mr. C. W. Wood, Christchurch, Mr. W. Grav Young, Wellington, and the Government town planner, Mr. J. W. Mawson. The preliminary designs are to be forwarded to the town clerk, Wellington, by January 23, 1930.
