INCREASE IN EXPORTS]

REMARKABLE PROGRESS MADE.

FURTHER EXPANSION EXPECTED.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Government is looking forward to a big increase in trade between New Zealand and Canada, according to a statement mado by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, during a discussion on his department Estimates in the House to-day. Trade with Canada was one of the most , important questions under consideration by tho department, said the Minister. Trade with that country had increased enormously during the past few years. Four years ago New Zealand exports amounted to £400,000, while last year they amounted to £2,400,000. If trade continued to increase at that rate it would not be long before New Zealand would be sending more to Canada than it was receiving

Tho appointment of a representative in. Canada had been approved by the Government. The officer would bo a sound business man and one of the first things ho would do would be to visit one or two of the centres in tho United States with a view to the development of New Zealand trade in that country.- The Government was looking forward to very satisfactory results.

The Canadian Government had treated New Zealand very well indeed, added the Miniister. .At present there was a unique opportunity of developing trade. The Canadian Railway Company was contemplating' buildihg • four refrigerator steamers, hut before doing 'SO it wanted an assurance from New Zealand that it would be given a reasonable share of the carriage of our frozen meat.. Representatives of Ihe company waited upon the New Zealand Government the other day. It was, of course, a matter for the Meat Board, and the Minister hoped that something might bo done so that the opportunity would not be allowed to go begging. " The department is pushing New Zea-_ land business wherever it can, and we are hopeful that there will be a further improvement in our export trade," concluded the Minister.
