NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION.

LIMERICK'S CONDITION.

The tender heel that has affected Limerick «t previous stages of las career is apparently once again x,source ox anxiety to his trainer. Tho seat of the trouble with Limerick is in ono of his fore feet, ar.d that llio same should have manifested itself jtjrtin at ihi3 early stage of the season must be regarded as disquietening. However, wo must just indulge in the hope that Limerick will be found 'jui*!) sound by the time the Australian Jockoy Club's Spring Meoling comes round next month, for. in the e-.-eat of his condition being satisfactory, the position may be raid to be favourablef.ir his winning tho leuding rosition a3 the largest etake-carner.

HOT FAVOURITE DEFEATED.

London papers now to hand show that the «lefpat of Lord Derby b horse Fairway in tho Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, vron by J toy a 1 Minstrej, was v/ell invested with the sensational. Odds of 5 to il wero laid on Fairway, but, after cracking on tho pace, ho was unablo to combat Royal Minstrel's challenges and was really beaten pointless in tho finishing stage of the journey. Royal Minstrel was ridden by J. Childs, who is praised for nis display of judgment in allowing his mount to balance himself properly throughout, while Fairway was running himself to a standstill. The valuo of tho Eclipse Stakes to the winner was £ 12,091.

A LUCKY PURCHASE.

According to a London writer, tho sum paid by the American sportsman Mr. John Whitney for Royal Minstrel when he bought the four-year-old son of Tetraterna in Juno last was £17,000. In the interval Royal Minstrel has won in stake-money about £14,354, and, oven though ho does not make •ny further addition under that heading, his potential value as a airo must bo estimated very highly.
