SECONDARY INDUSTRY.
A DEVELOPMENT BOARD.
VIEWPOINT OF FARMERS
Fears that the Development of Industries Board, which it is suggested should bo set up by tho Government, would bocomo to all intents and purposes a tariff board, wero expressed at a meeting of tho executive of tho Auckland provincial branch of tho New Zealand Farmers' Union last evening. It was stated that no objection would bo made to a development board if it was concerned solely with advising secondary industries. A letter was received from tho Minister of Customs stating that theio was no proposal to establish a tariff board, lie was in accord with tho views expressed in a remit from tho Towai branch, that all tariff matters should bo thrashed out on tho floor of tho llouso of Representativos. Mr. It. H. Feisst said there was a definito suggestion that a Development of Industries Board should be set up. In his opinion this board would bo" simply a means of raising protective tariffs, otherwise it would not bo supported by the secondary industries. "I tako it tho branch is not opposed to a board which will bo meroly for tho purpose of advising tho manufacturers," said tho president, Mr. A. A. Ross. "Howovor, thoro is t\ feeling that the main object of tho board will bo to deal with tariffs." It was decided to write to tho Minister asking what the functions of the proposed development board would be.
