NEW BRIDGE OVER WHAU.
HIGHWAYS BOARD'S ACTION
PUBLIC WORKS ACT INVOKED.
On (ho application of tbo Main Highways Board (ho Wliau Bridge has been brought within tho scope of the section of tho Public Works Act dealing'with the erection, apportionment of cost and tho maintenance of bridges in which two or more local bodies arc interested. Tho construction of a bridge suitable to modern traffic conditions has been u vexod subject for somo time, and a year ago a conferenco of local body reprcsen* tatives was held, as an outcome of which the Main Highways Board approved tho preparation of plans by tho Now Lynn Town Board's consulting engineers, Messrs. Gray and Gulliver. Acceptance of the plans was deferred by the Highways Board until tho question of the opening span had been settled. However, in addition to the New Lynn plans, it appears that a set has been prepared by tho Public Works Department. The Mayor of New Lynn, Mr. C. F. Gardner, said yesterday that it was not definito which plans would be followed. Ho understood tho work would have to be done by tho New Lynn Borough Council. As tho bridge has now been brought under 1 tho Public Works Act all tho local authorities having an interest in it will be required to express an opinion on tho plans and tho apportionment of costs when that is decided upon, and their objections, if any, will be considered and dealt, with by tho Governor-General in Council.
