STATE OF KAi MAI ROAD.

HIGHWAY TO MATAMATA

[BY TELEGRAPH, —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Tuesday. In a report to the Tauranga County Council tho clerk stated regarding native rates that there appeared to be a very fair prospect of collecting a certain amount. After some correspondence regarding consolidation he was compiling a list of rates due and overdue in respect of what is known as tho Rotoiti series, principally in Maketu Riding. At a conference of representatives of local bodies held at Tauranga yesterday the need for improving Kaimai Road was emphasised. A motion was adopted supporting the Tauranga County Council in asking the Main Highways Board to take over tho Tauranga-Matamata main highway from Ruahihi Bridge to tho county boundary, as a Government road. It was resolved further that tho Minister of Public Works bo urged, in tho event of this being impracticable, to placo on the estimates a sum sufficient to complete the work in the Matamata County and to bring tho road in Tauranga County up to main highways' standard.

It was decided to forward the resolution to the Prime Minister.

In a report to the County Council the engineer, Mr. F. A. Stevens, stated that the contractors had completed 54 chains of metalling in the Hikurangi Gorge. Work was proceeding on tho new bridges at Rereatukahia and Tahawai and improvements had been effected to Thompson's track, which provides access between the Katikati and To Archa districts.

Tho council decided to call tenders for crushing 13,000 yards of metal at tho To Puna quarry and to extend tho road pumicing in tho Maketu Riding. It was decided to take tho necessary slops for the application of the plumbing and drainago regulations to Mount Maunganui.
