SHOOTING OF MOOSE.

LICENCE ARRANGEMENTS.

STATEMENT BY MINISTER.

[by TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL IIErORTER.] "WELLINGTON. Monday.

Tiie question of licences for the taking of wapiti and moose near Lake Te Anau during tho coming season has recently been discussed between the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, and the Southland Acclimatisation Society. It is understood that tho society is agreeable to a suggestion that ;i few licences should be issued for tho rnooso season, the fee, it is believed, being in the vicinity of £3O a licence. Referring to-day to the issue of licences tho Minister said that in conjunction with the officers of tho department and the acclimatisation society very careful consideration had been given to the number of licences to bo issued for wapiii and to the country to be prospected. The number of licences proposed is the same a.s last year, three blocks with two licences each, with the right to tako two heads for each licence," said the Minister. " Last year the taking of stags with heads of not less than ten points was allowed, but this year it is proposed to alter this to not less than twelve points." A prospecting block suggested for wapiti was one reached from the north arm of Lake Te Anau, on which there was reason to believe there was a herd of wapiti, but the society did not feel warranted in charging a licence fee for it until it had been prospected. The Minister said that, in previous prospecting authorities arrangements wero made with the persons to whom prospecting licences were granted as to the payment of a licence fee in case a wapiti was shot, and it' licence fees were received the distribution of tho money should be the same as that received from stalking blocks, half to tho acclimatisation society and half to the Depart->.ent of Tourist and Health Resorts.
