SUGAR IN AUSTRALIA.

EPJIBARGO ON JAVA SUPPLY

CAMPAIGN FOR REMOVAL,

(Received August l'-\ 9.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE. AUK. 12. An organisation called the 'Jown and Country Union has launched a campaign in favour of the removal of the embatgo on Java sugar, owing to tho high price of Australian sugar. It is claimed that, while Australian sugar costs consumers .C 36 10s a ton, Java white sugar could be landed at £lO 10s a ton. Tho consequence is that Australia is said to be paying £7,000.000 a year more than she should, simply in the interests of the home grown article, which is now getting into tho hands of southern Europeans. The union describes this penalty as an enormous one.

A number of representative public bodies have promised help in the campaign.
