TARANAKI BURGLARIES
TWO MORE THEFTS REPORTED
GELIGNITE FOUND IN OVEN.
ELTHAM RESIDENT'S EXPERIENCE.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday,
Two burglaries were committed in New Plymouth during the week-end, but the thieves secured only about £2.
The Vacuum Oil Company's store, in Moleswortli Street was one of the places visited. The burglars apparently gained an entrance on to the property by climb; ing round the end of the iron fence on the embankment. Once round the fence they smashed the lock of the office door with a heavy instrument to gain entry to the building from the office. They took £1 2s Id.
The other burglary took place at Mr. C. Swanscri's engineering works in Rangi Street, where the lock on a door, of the hasp and staple type, was cut through. The sum of 18s was taken from a drawer in the office, and from a cupboard stamps to the value of 4d, together with some private papers, were taken. A startling discovery was made by Mr. G. D. McGregor at his home in Graham Street, Eltham, when two plugs of gelignite were found in the kitchen oven. This lends a sinister aspect to the burglary at the residence on Thursday, when the house was broken into while members of the family were absent in the afternoon. Although it was at first supposed that only a few glass tumblers were taken Mr. McGregor now finds tl»at two suitcases, a quantity of cigarettes and other small articles arc missing.
