STRANDED SCHOONER.
REFLOATING ARRANGEMENTS
SUCCESS HOPED FOR TO-MORROW
Repairs to the Northern Company's auxiliary schooner Paroto, which was blown ashore at White Island last Wednesday night, are being expedited, and it is now hoped to refloat the vessel tomorrow. Very stormy weather was experienced at the island on Saturday, and in the evening the steamer Apanui, which is standing by to assist in the salvage work, had to leave the anchorage at Crater Bay and put to sea for the night, as a gale was blowing from the south-west. The Apanui returned to the island next morning, but at mid-dav she left for Tauranga, where she remained yesterday. Messrs. Pearce and Bently's powerful salvage pump was despatched from Auckland for White Island by the company's auxiliary schooner Tuhoe last night. The pump is the largest of its kind in New Zealand, and will be transferred to the Apanui Mercury Bay. After the Paroto is refloated she will be towed to Auckland by the Apanui and the pump will be used to cope with any extensive inrush of water that might develop in the schooner's hull during the trip.
