HAMILTON, Monday

After 34i years' service as a soldier, Sergeant-Major Elliott Furdom, first-class warrant officer, New Zealand Permanent Staff, Hamilton, is retiring this week ou pension. He "was born in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He joined the Royal Horse Artillery at an early age and saw service with that unit for 16A years, lie served throughout the South African War.

Sorgeant-Mnjor Purdom camo to New Zealand 21 years ago and three vears later he joined the Ne.w Zealand Permanent Staff. He served with tho Auckland Mounted Rifles and tho New Zealand Army Ordnance in Egypt and Gallipoli. Since the war lie lias been connected with the Waikato Mounted Rifles, with headnuarters at Hamilton.
