MATERNITY SCHEME.
REDUCTION OF MORTALITY. ANNOUNCEMENT OF DETAILS. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received August 11, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 10.
The British Medical Association has prepared an important memorandum in favour of a national maternity scheme, in England and Wales. Under this a doctor and a midwife would bo assured to every mother giving birth to a child.
The plan also provides for pre-natal and post-natal, treatment which would greatly reduce mortality. Not only does the scheme cover women insured under national health schemes and tho wives of insured men, but all women of a similar economic status.
The estimated cost is £2.100,000 n year, of which £1,250,000 would be paid to midwives and £550,000 to doctors. There arc 750,000 maternity cases at present under the national, insurance scheme.
The proposed extra cost -would be covered by an additional 4d a week from th.e employer or the woman herself, plus 2d a week from the State.
