The crew of the steamer Balleniere were searching for traces of the lost members of the crew of tlic airship Italia on the coast of Spitsbergen. Three men, exhausted after n march of 400 miles, were attacked by a hungermaddened bear.
Captain Alhertini, commander of the expedition, rushed to the aid ol the men. lie slipped on the treacherous ice as he ran and his rifle exploded, fatally wounding one of the three men.
