AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE.

CO-ORDINATION OF WORK.

With tho meeting of 18 dairy scientists at the Dairy Research Instiluto at Massoy AgriculLuro College this week there was instituted a movement of paramount importance to tho dairy industry in New Zealand. Tho conference, which was the first of its naturo to bo held in the Dominion, was convened by Professor W. Riddel, director of tho New Zealand Dairy Research Institute. It was a very successful gathering and some important resolutions wero passed.

It was decided to form a New Zealand .Dairy Science Association. Professor Riddel, was elected president, and Dr. F. A. McDowall, secretary, of tho newlyformed organisation, while a committee was appointed to draw up rules and regulations for the association.

' The main work of tho conference was to endeavour to standardise tho technique and methods of analysis employed in various laboratories in order that results of dairy ,research in different laboratories would he strictly comparable. Tentative methods of chemical aiul bacteriological analysis of milk, cliee.se, butler, casein and other dairy products were agreed upon. These will bo tested at onch laboratory during the coining year, and it hoped that at a later conference-it will bo possible to reach definite satisfactory standards.

Great interest attached (o the proceedings and throughout Iho conference there was manifested a spirit of co-operation in the endeavour lo promote the interests of the dairy industry. The opportunity was afforded visiting delegates of inspecting the temporary laboratories of the dairy research institute, the Masscy Collogo dairy farm and factory site.

It was decided that the second annual conference bo hold at the dairy research institute, Massey College, in 1930. The conference signified its attitude toward investigations which have been carried out by Mr. TV 0. Vealc, at Hawora, relative to payments for supplies of ltiiJk and cheese, an afternoon session being devoted lo consideration of methods of payment. After an animated discussion the following resolution was adopted : "That this meeting considers the report of Mr. P. 0. Vealc on the relative values of high and low testing milk for cheese-making in Now Zealand of such a basic interest to the clieesemaking industry that members are of the opinion the Department of .Agriculture and the Department of Scientific and Industrial .Research could well extend tho work to include similar observations in other parts of the country and inquiry into the economics of high and low testing milk."
