EGG EXPORT SEASON. GUARANTEE ARRANGEMENTS. PAYMENT ON SLIDING SCALE. Arrangements for tho 1929 export season have now been finalised by the Auckland Egg Export Committee, and tho rates of the Government guarantee havo been announced. The rates will be as follows: —14JIb. pack (limited to 20 per cent, of tho shipment), £2 15s a case of 30 dozen; 151b. pack, £3 a case; 161b. pack, £3 2s 6d a case; 171b. pack, £3 5s a case.

Tho Government has decided this season to pay the rates on a sliding scale, in view of the fact that various grades, according to weight, have realised prices on the London market in accord with the weight per 1001b. The 14Alb. pack which has been included is to contain eggs of a 230z. to the standard dozen grade. The adoption of this grade will mean the 151b. pack will contain 2oz. eggs, nnd in actual practice will probably result in an increase in tho number of 161b. cases packed. Tho New Zealand Poultry Association has been endeavouring to obtain a flat rato of £3 2s 6d a case. It has been pointed out that tho producers' main crop comes within tho 151b. pack, and that for all practical purposes tho 171b. pack, which receives £3 ss, is out of the question.

Last year tlio export from Auckland was confined to tho 151b. pack, which represents 50 dozen 2oz. eggs to the case, but this year tho Government has adopted the four packs. Tho main portion of the crop will be within the limits of the 151b. pack, while it is anticipated that a fair number of 161b. packs will be exported. While the guarantee for tho 151b. pack is 5s less than that paid last year, tho rate on the 161b. pack shows an increase of 2s 6d compared with last year. The system of six pools, comprising local firms of merchants and producers' societies, will work under the direction of the Governemnt poultry instructor and grader, Mr. E. C. Jarrett. A good season, showing considerable improvement over that of last year, is expected by producers. Within the last six weeks prices havo risen from 3d a dozen less than tho rates prevailing last year to 3d greater, a very marked improvement. On Friday eggs were quoted at from 2d to 4d higher than the prices ruling tho samo week in 1928. With greatly improved organisation this season both local sales and the export trade should provide better returns to jaroducers, and higher all-round prices should result when the export season opens next month.
