THREAT TO GOLF LINKS.
V BOAD THROUGH COURSE.
.CORNWALL PARK PROJECT. MAUNGAKIEKIE CLUB AFFECTED. / AGAINST PROPOSAL. Improvements at Cornwall Park and the scheme to construct a new drive which will eventually connect Green Lano with Queen Street, Onehunga, threaten ' to bisect tho Maungakiekio Golf Club's links, and tho club is concerned for the future. Many members aro apprehensive that tho works will deprive tho club of any assurance of tenure after the next two years and that the road scheme projected will completely upset tho lay-out of tho . Jinks.
Tho drive planned by the Cornwall Park trustees will commence at Green Lane and skirl around the back of One Tree Hill on the eastern side. In March earthwork extending over about a mile
was commenced with a. view to tree
-planting. To simplify subsequent road ■ lj formation tho trustees decided to make the surface of tho broken country up to permanent levels for preliminary treeplanting along tho proposed route. The intention is to allow the trees to secure fi start and avoid regrading when the drive is pushed through. The trustees have taken a long view and the work is ...being done as funds come to hand, it having been pointed out some, timo ago when the schema was formulated that it .would interfere with the golf links. ■ Tho Maungakiekio Club has about 800 members and tho links are very popular on account of their proximity to tho city. Only ono hole of'the courso remains on tho property which is administered by the Ono Tree Hill Domain Board, and tho 7 rest of tho area is under <hc jurisdiction of tho Cornwall Park trustees. The Golf Club's tenure is on a one-year basis and there is no alternative course in view. '.The club committees have been periodically advised of tho intentions of the ~ park trustees under the improvement scheme, but with the passing of time the matter has become ono of some moment. The trustees have expressed willing- / ness to discuss the position with tho ■ golfers. . A petition is being prepared asking for the preservation of tho course .and suggesting to the trustees that the drive schemo should be modified to leave the links intact.
