OBITUARY.

DR. W. G. DUFFI ELD. (Received August 2, 1.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 1. The death has occurred of Dr. Walter Geoffrey Duffield, director of the Commonwealth Solar Observatory at Canberra.

Dr. Walter Geoffrey Duffield was born in South Australia and educated at Adelaide and Cambridge Universities. Ho was for a time a research assistant at tho National Physical Laboratory, England, and professor of physics at Reading University. Ho served in the war in tho Royal Air Force.

MR. S. E. GREGORY. SYDNEY. Aug. 1. The sudden death occurred this morning of Mr. Sydney Edward Gregory, the famous Australian cricketer, aged 59. lie was a celebrated fieldsman at coverpoint.

Mr. Sydney Edward Gregory was born in 1870, and played in first-class cricket from 1089 to 1912, for both New South Wales and Australia. Ho was in all tho teams which visited England from 1890 to 1912, being captain on his last visit, lie also played on three visits in America and in South Africa and was in Now Zealand in 1905, as a member of Noblo's team. He four times scored over 1000 runs—and onco 999—in a season in Australia. He mado 25 centuries, 15,783 runs, with an average of 28.4. fn test matches he mado 2282, with an average of 24.5, and played 100 innings,in test games. In 1897 lie was one of Wisden's " Cricketers of tho Year." Ho scored 583 for New South Wales v. Queensland nt Brisbano in 1906. Ho and M. A. Noble made 315 for the fourth wickot for Now South Wales against Victoria at Sydney in 1907. For the Australian Imperial Forces in 1919 he made 1008 runs and took 151 wickets.
