PARK IN GRAFTON GULLY.
FORMATION BY COUNCIL. PROPOSAL SET ON FOOT. A movement to secure the improvement of tho upper portion <"f Grafton Gully as a park was initiated at the meeting of the City Council last evening, when the council adopted a suggestion from Mr. H. P. Burton that preliminary inquiries bo made for tho acquisition by the council of tho area of privately-owned land on the eastern side of the gully, and that tho commercialisation of tho land at the top end of the gully be made the subject of investigation.
Mr. Burton said tho schemo had been brought under notico of tho council 18 years ago. In tho gully were 21, acres of native bush which was probably without a parallel for variety in the North Island. Mr. J. B. Faterson said it was the duty of the council to conserve tho property. It was hoped the owners would meet tho council in a magnanimous spirit. Tho suggestion was loferred to tho Parks Committee and the mover. It was also decided that in connection with tho preservation of native bush, the commercialising of tho upper portion of the gully should bo investigated.
