THE EARTHQUAKE DISTRICT.

MANY PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] WESTPORT, Thursday. Captain Whitford, of the Marine Department, in a Moth aeroplane, piloted by Captain Buckley, to-day made a survey of the steamor routes as far as Hikurangi lighthouse. He saw nothing to indicate a disturbance of the sea bottom in the nature of shoaling. Further flights were made by Captain Buckley, accompanied by Corporal Smith. The first flight was from Seddonville along the Glasgow fault to the sea. Niunerous photographs were taken en route. The second flight was to Murchison, via Lyell. An inspection was made and photographs were taken of the slips in the Matakitaki River, which caused the lake to form.

The aeroplane then left for Christchurch, but when in the vicinity of tho Lewis Saddle, engine trouble developed, and the machino was brought back to Westport, where a perfect landing was made. The engine will be overhauled in the morning, and if all is well tho return flight to Christchurch will bo made by way of Arthur's Pass.
