EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.

CITY COUNCIL DONATION,

AMOUNT RAISED TO £525.

TOTAL OF £12,703 NOW IN FUND

The. Auckland City Council's donation to thu earthquake relief funds was raised to £525 last evening, when a suggestion by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, that £420 should be added to the original contribution of £lO5 was agreed to. The Mayor said that when ho was in Wellington attending u meeting of the Central Relief Committee ho became impressed with the necessity for contributing to the funds as freely as possible. Auckland had really nia'de a name for itself owing to the manner in which the peoplo had responded to the appeal for funds. When the council had voted £lO5 if. was to give tho fund a start, and he thought thai it was justified in giving £525.

A .suggestion by Mr. J. P. I.undon that (ho donation should be £IOSO failed to find any support. 1 Subscriptions received yesterday, plus the added donation from the council, brought the total in the Mayor's fund to £12,703 16s 6d. Yesterday's donations were:—-F. D. Woodroffo and Company, Ltd., £lO 10s; postal messengers' staff, chief post office, Auckland, £2 2s; A.M.P., £2.

The total in the Herald end Weekly News fund for tho relief of distress occasioned by the earthquake passed the £9500 mark yesterday, the sum of £l9 received bringing the list up to £9517. A donation of ten shillings from "Thankful,'' was accompanied by a note explaining tha» the money was "part of the first wages I have earned for 15 months."
