THE WATERFRONT ROAD.
Sir,—Your correspondent's criticism of the cost to Auckland ratepayers of the. Waterfront Road is too mild altogether. With, the assistance of the late Government the council raised a loan of £IOO,OOO toward the cost and it has also taken over tho liability of £IOO,OCO from the Tamaki Road Board. Now it proposes to spend another £30,000 upon it and it is;a moral certainty that the council willl-be called on by the motorists to spend another £20.000 to have the road concreted. A quarter of a million pounds in order to enchance the value of Orakei sections and to provide quicker access to Auckland's wharves and railway station- fot a total population of about 2000 people! No wonder my rates have gone, up si sty per cent, this last few years. Mercator.
