IDENTITY OF RACEHORSE.

CASE OF PRINCE HUMPHREY

MISTAKE ESTABLISHED.

REPORT BY THE REGISTRAR.

OWNER TO PAY THE COSTS.

(Received July 17, 12.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 16. The investigation made by Mr, C. Yuille, registrar of racehorses, into tho identity of Prince Humphrey has estab. lished tho fact that ho is a bay gelding three-years-old by Duke Humphrey (imported) out of Princess Hazel (imported), branded B under an inverted V on tho near shoulder and 5 over 136, now almost invisible, on tho near thigh. He is a bay with black points. Tho other horse, whoso brands wero confused, was Cragsman which Mr. Yuille finds is a bay gelding three-years-old by Duko Humphrey (imported) out of Shepherd Princess, branded B under an inverted V near the shoulder and 5 over 144 near the thipji, with a largo star, a streak and blaze over the left nostril, both foro pasterns broken white and both hind pasterns broken whito.

Mr. Yuillo adds: "Tho evidence indicates that tho confusion has arisen over tho names of the respective dams, rather than that tho horses had been confused by any similarity of appearance. The reason may have been because the full brands of tho two horses were omitted from the catalogue of the Woodlands dispersal sale. "Had the secretary of tho New Zealand Racing Conference checked the applications for registration of tho two horses, or had each applicant checked his own application for registration at tho time with tho registrar's certificates, tha error would then have been apparent."

Tlio Committee of the Australian Jockey Club to-day approved of tho registrar's report. It decided to call upon Mr. C. G. Macindoe, of Auckland, owner of Prince Humphrey, to register Prince Humphrey and to amend his nomination of that horse for tho Epsom Handicap, the Metropolitan Handicap and tho Warwick Farm Spring Handicap, paying a fine of £1 in each case—otherwise tho entries will be declared invalid—together with the cost 3 of the inquiry into the horse's identity.

The committee also held that the New Zealand horse Star God xvas ineligible to take part in the Epsom Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap and Warwick Farm Spring Handicap. The rules pro. vide that a horse outside the Commonwealth can be entered without prior registration, bub as Star God happened to be in Sydney when nominated tha horse slioyld have been registered beforehand.

At the dispersal of the Woodlands Stud, New South Wales, about three years ago, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie purchased on behalf of the Auckland Stud Company two yearling colts by Duke Humphrey from Princess Hazel and Shepherd Princess respectively. In due course the youngsters arrived in Auckland, and some time later one colt, now known to fame as Princs Humphrey, was sold to Mr. C. G. Macindoe through his trainer, J. T. Jamieson. The other colt is still in the possession of his purchaser, and is known as Cragsman.
