UNIVERSAL HALF-HOLIDAY.
OBSERVANCE ON SATURDAYS.
PROPOSAL IN PARLIAMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Parliament, is to have an opportunity to debate tho question whether Saturday should be the universal half holiday in New Zealand. During the recess the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, gave a deputation an undertaking that such an opportunity would be afforded. It was anticipated that a Government bill on the subject might appear, but the procedure to bo followed was disclosed in the House of Representatives to-day, when the .Minister of Labour, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, gave notice to move the following motion: —" In the opinion of this House provision should be made for the general observance on Saturday of the statutory closing day for shops and tho weekly half holiday of shop assistants."
A time lias yet to be fixed for tho discussion of the motion, and it is probablo tho Government's legislative intentions in the matter will be guided by the result of that expression of opinion by the House.
