NO PERMIT TO LAND.
LARGE FAMILY ON NIAGARA.
DECISION BY DEPARTMENT.
DEPARTURE FOR AUSTRALIA.
Although they arrived at Auckland from Honolulu by the Niagara on Monday, full of hopes of settling in New Zealand for a. period, the Xury family was not allowed to land, and the members of the party were passengers on the Niagara when she lesumed her trip to Sydney last evening. Customs officials in Auckland referred the caso to Wellington on Monday, and a reply was received yesterday afternoon to the effect that the Immigration Department would not issue temporary permits to the party to reside in New Zealand. Orio woman, a daughter-in-law of Mr. Peter Xury, the head of tho family, is suffering from gastritis, and tho collector of customs decided to allow her to remain in Auckland for medical attention. However, she did not wish to leave her children and left with the others.
The position row is that Xury family, comprising husband and wife, their five sons, two of whom are married, and are accompanied by their wives and four young children, three daughters arid a son-in-law, will travel to Sydney and will make application for permits to land there. Mr. Peter Xury emphatically denied the statement that he and his family are gipsies and claims that they arc American citizens. Ho said that three of his sons were qualified motor mechanics, and all the adult members of the family were capable of supporting themselves in New Zealand. Tho family wished to work its way to England. It is thought that the Xury family has been refused a permit owing to tho trouble experienced with a large family of gipsies some time ago. This family eventually had to be deported, and the immigration authorities were caused much trouble.
