TEST MATCH IN AUCKLAND

WELLINGTON, Tuesday

The members of the Australian hockey team, under the managership of Mr. W. Roth well (New South Wales), arrived in Wellington this morning by the Maheno from Sydney and were met by officials of tho New Zealand Hockey Association and the Wellington Hockey Association. Accompanying the team is Mr. W. Whitfield, a vice-president of tho New South Wales Hockey Association. The team is as follows:—Goalkeepers, C. O'Connor (Queensland), H. Flockart (New South Wales); backs. W. Todkill (New South Wales), H. Ferguson (Queens land), J. Elliott; halves, W. Grant, E. Pulley, W. Wanloss (New South Wales), E. Coulter (Queensland) ; forwards, 11. Cormie (vice-captain), C. Cormio (Queensland), W. Hudson S. Stephens, L. Fitzpatrick, W. Nettleton and T. Lee, captain (all New South Wales). The team is a youthful one and is eager to go through the New Zealand tour undefeated. In conversation Mr. Rothwcll said that in (he early part of the season tho grounds in most parts of New South Wales and Queensland were hard and dry, but latterly there had been play on heavier grounds, more like thoso the team is likely to play upon in the Dominion at this time of tho year. Thoso players who have been here before in hockey teams are Messrs. Flockart, Nettleton, Grant and Rothwcll. At present an Australian hockey carnival is being held in Perth and the result is that all the players are from New South Wales and Queensland.

Strong Team Selected

The team is as originally selected and the opinion was expressed to-day that it is the strongest side which has left Australia, an opinion endorsed by Mr. W. If. Down, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Hockey Association. Six of the players were engaged in the last lest match against New Zealand, played at Brisbane.

The following matches will be played:— July 18, v. Wairarapa, at Carterton; July 20, v. Wellington, at Wellington; July 24, v. Dannovirke, at Dannevirkc; July 27, v. New Zealand, at Wanganui; July 31, v. Otago, at Dunedin; August 3, v. Canterbury, at Christchurch; August 7, v. Fcilding, at Feilding; August 10, v. New Zealand, at Auckland (test match for Manning Memorial Cup). Manning Cup Matches.

It is considered that New Zealand will have tho hardest of tasks to retain tho Manning Memorial Cup, which goes to the winners of the test match. Tho Manning Cup is in memory of Bert Manning (Wellington), one of the managers of tho 1923 team, who became ill in Melbourne and died when the team was on its way home. Australia has not yet held tho trophy. The results of the test matches played to date arc as follows:—l 922, at Palmerston North, New Zealand won 5 —4; 1923, at Sydney, New Zealand won 2—l; 1925, at Wellington, New Zealand won, s—l; 1927, at Brisbane, a draw, 3 all. The visitors were entertained at a luncheon held under the Auspices of the Now Zealand Hockey Association to-day.
