MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH.
[BY TELEGRAFH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] I'E KUITI. Tuesday. The death has occurred at Te Ivumi, two miles from Te Kuiti, of a wellknown native of the district, -Mr. James Joseph (Whitinui Ilohepa), at the age of 87 years. Mr. Joseph, who was a chief of tho Ngati-Maniapoto Tribe, was highly esteemed by both Maoris and Europeans. Ho spent practically all his life in the King Country. and his death will mean the severing of a link with tho early history of tho district. Mr. Joseph leaves a widow and one son, Mr. A. W. Joseph, who is wellknown in local football circles. A is being held at To Kuiti and is attended by natives from all parts of tho district and by representatives of distant tribes*
