CONCERN IN AUSTRALIA.
WIRELESS MAN'S REPORT,
(Received July 1-1, 5.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, July H
An operator at La Perouse wireless station last evening heard a portion of a message being transmitted from Hobart to Melbourne, which caused some concern, as the operator was unable to discover the source of the words picked up.
The message read: " Loud explosion heard nt 2.15 p.m., one and a-half miles north-west of lighthouse. Column of smoke then drifting in the direction of Stephen Island." It is thought here that the explosion is possibly connected with tho earthquake disturbances in New Zealand. The message probably refers to the report from Farewell Spit.
