EXPLOSION OCCURS AT SEA.

Tho acting-seciclary of (lie I'usf. and Tclegra| li Department lias Ijccii advised as follows by the postmaster at Collinswood, Nelson : '■'l'lio lighthouse keeper at Farewell Spit reports that at 2.15 p.in yesterday a heavy explosion occurred out at sea, about uiio and a half miles noith-west of Farewtil Spit. "A hugo column of water and black smoke shot into the air and then travelled very rapidly in the direction of French Pass. Jt passed close to tlio lighthouse. "No damage has occurred to the lighthouse."
Two submarine upheavals in tho Tasman Sea were reported in a message from Sydney on July 11. The message slated: When the steamer Aelybryn was midway between Capo Maria Van Diemen and Sydney she passed close to two submarine upheavals. Captain Stevenson said that on July 7, without warning, a great surge of water roso out of the sea and gradually grew to a height of about 50ft,. before settling down again. He estimated that the width of the mass of water was between ]sft. and 20ft.
A quarter of an hour later a second upheaval occurred in the same way. No sensation was felt on board the ship. Captain Stevenson said there must have been a terrific upheaval at the bottom of the sea.
