ALLEGED BOOKMAKING.
THIRTEEN MEN ARRESTED. POLICE RAIDS IN TARANAKI. CHARGES IN FOUR CENTRES. PLANS CAREFULLY LAID. [by TELEGRAPH.—'own mnTiESrONDENT-l NEW PLYMOUTH. Sunday. Raids on premises alleged lo he used liy bookmakers were carried out by tho police simultaneously in the four chief Taranaki centres yesterday afternoon. Thirteen arrests wero made in New Plymouth, Stratford, Kllliam and llawera. Yesterday was the last day of the Wellington races.
Organised from district headquarters in New Plymouth tho series of police raids was (be most extensive ever carried out in Taranaki in connection with alleged breaches of the Gaining Act. Ten of tho men arrested were alleged to be bookmakers, one an assistant and two were charged with being found in alleged gaming houses. The police plans were evidently carefully made and carried out. In New Plymouth, six men, Herbert Thomas Allen, John Allen, Robert Mascall, Gcorgo McGlaslian, John Shore and Oscar Royce Ulandcr, were arrested, the charge against each being that of cai tying on the business of bookmakers. Accused were brought before Mr. E. C. Havton, J.P., shortly after 4 o'clock. Detective Meiklejobn applied for a remand until Wednesday. This was granted. Bail was allowed.
At Stratford Dorninick Sisarich, charged with using a restaurant as a common gaming house, was brought before Mr. E. G. Wilson, J.P., and remanded until Monday.
At llawera Herbert Allen, billiard saloon keeper, and Thomas Henderson Tcesdale, tea rooms proprietor, wero each charged on two counts with carrying on the business of bookmakers and keeping a common gaming house. William Eider was charged with assisting Tcesdale. Edward La very and Thomas Connell were charged with being found in a common gaming house. All accused were brought before Mr. S. Blake, J.P., and remanded until Thursday.
Antonio Novak, restaurant keeper, Elthain,- was charged before Mr. I. J. Bridget-, J.P., with carrying on the business of bookmaker and remanded until Tuesday.
Ten of the men charged were remanded on bail in eacli case of self £IOO and one surety of £IOO. Bail was fixed at £SO and a similar surely in the case of the alleged assistant and £5 in the case of the two men charged with being on premises.
