BOGUS COLLECTORS.

PROTECTION OF PUBLIC.

BILL IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

With tho object of checking the operations of bogus collectors for charitable institutions tho New South Wales Government is having a bill dialled. It will contain some drastic provisions, by which it is hoped that tho public will bo safeguarded in future against swindles such as have been, exposed from timo to time.

The bill will provide for registration of all organisations that collect money for food and other forms of poor relief, official inspection of their books, and the compulsory rendering of accounts to tho department. These organisations will also be obliged to furnish statements regarding the expenditure and the manner in which tho moneys have been spent. An inspector of accounts will be appointed generally to supervise the activities of tho organisations. Collectors will bo licensed, and will bo liable to arrest if unable to establish their bona fides.

Tho bill will not affect art unions or lotteries, which aro covered by an Act passed during the last session of f'arliamcnt, and which como under the control of the Attorney-General's Department.
