NOTES ON THE RACING.

OTAIRI SPRINGS SURPRISE.

MAUNGA WINS HANDSOMELY.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent. 1 W ELLING TON, Saturday. The racing was again good at trcntham to-day, but tho favourites did not fare well. Tho wins of Otairi and Maunga were big surprises, As a ic3idt of ari inquiry after tho running of Hie Winter Hurdles A. Hobsou, rider of Overhaul, was suspended for five weeks for crossing Comical and then Mister fin nip. Overhaul's crossing of Mister Camp did not affect, (he result. For tho Tula vera Hurdles Amorist was made a slightly better favourite than Tbtirnbell, wliilo Waltzer and Horomea were also well backed. Four furlongs from home Horomea and Amorist wero together in with Glenn Bay and Thurnbell bcveral lengths back. So they raced to the straight ami Horomea came away at the last fenco to beat Amorist by three lengths. •Thurnbell wns three lengths back third and •Lady C.ay fourth. Next came Modern, Glen a Bay and Grand National. Horomea / improved with cuch race at the meeting and her form was consistently good. Amorist ra n anoiher good rtce. Thurnbell did not fence well, otherwise he would haye been closer. Eleven startfi in tho Novice Handicap * Jusslo was u solid favourito, with 'Houndolay, Justify and Last Mark all i;avily backed. Boundclay and Juggle *ote tho leaders into tho straight from Air

Laddie, Arrowzono and Last Mark. At tho falso rail Last Mark caino through on tlio inside and won by two lengths from Roundelay, who beat Air Luddio by half a, length. Arrowzone was fourth, followed by Shot Silk, Jugglo and Justify. Last Mark handled tho going well and won nicely. Roundelay i 3 very promising and should bo useful as a three-year-old. Juggle failed to run 011.

Thero was good wagering on tho Crofton Handicap, Maori Boy and Balloou being tho best backed. Havering had a, lead of six lengths across tho top from Austerity, Fine Acre, Brilliant Light and Merle. Havering was slill clear turning for home, with Lucre, Fine Acre, Brilliant Light and Maori Boy in a bunch. Inside tho distance Havering began to tire, but ho lasted long enough to win by a length from Maori Boy, who defeated Olauru Lass by a neck. Royal Black was fourth, followed by Mandarine, Shortly and Austerity. Havering, whose rider claimed a slb apprcntito allowance, was a better horse for his lacing on tho previous days and gave nothing a chance. Maori Boy again run a fml-J race. Twelvo stalled in tho Winter Hurdles and Mister Gamp was made a' hot favourite, over twice as well backed us the second choice. King's Guard, who was a fow pounds better fancied than Overhaul. Princo Lu went out to make tho pace and when they settled down his closest attendants were Comical, Li.caruo, Aberfcldy. Troilus. Red Fuchsia and Overhaul, with Mister Gamp and King's Guard near the rear. Along the back Overhaul momentarily ran up to Comical in tho lead, Princo Lu having dropped back at this stage. Mister Gamp and King's Guard also moved up. Running across the top Comical hud charge, closely follo.vjd by King's Guard, Overhaul, Mister Gamp and Aberfcldy. They wero in a bunch at the luru aiid wero the only ones with chances. Overhaul's Splendid Jumping. At the last fer.co Overhaul just led Mister Gump and soon after landing crossed over tho favourite. Overhaul then went on to beat Mister Gamp by two lengths, with Comical four lengths away third. King's Guard was four lengths back fourth, followed by Locarno and Red Fuchsia, tho others being badly bcalen. Overhaul was always going well ami stayed oil splendidly. Mister Gamp did not jump too well, but made a very game effort. Thero was another • heavy pool on Iho Winter Oats Handicap and Merry Mint was a solid favourite, with Fairy Herald and Taneriri heavily hacked. Otairi was ninth choice> at a long price. Thero was a false start beforo they wero let go, only one side of the barrier going up. Onco they settled down Otairi and Merry Mint were the leaders, closely followed by Full Feather, Town Bank, Black Mint and Gold Cure. Otairi drew out at tho falso rail and, vigorously ridden by R. Reed, went on to win by two lengths from Gold Cure. Full Feather was a smiliar distance away third and Merry Mint fourth. Then canio Fairy Herald, Town Bank and High Pitch. Otairi's win v.'us a surprise, although ho ran a good raco on the first day. Merry Mint was going very easily at tho (urn. but failed to finish with .ho dash expected. Steeplechase Surprise. An outsider in Maunga effected a surprise in tho July Steeplechase, for which Fubriano, Alario and Radiate were best backed. With a round t • go Radiate and Boomerday had charge, with Royal Eim, Alaric and Brigadier Bill in close attendance, and Maunga moving up from the rear. Five furlongs from home Radiate, Alario and Royal Elm were tho leaders and Maunga was closing up fast. Alaric headed Radiato at the second to lost fence, where Maunga and Matu had run up handy. Maunga took charge before reaching the last fence and came on to win handsomely by three lengths from Matu, with Alaric four lengths away third. Radiate was fourth, followed by Royai Elm, Rangi Sarto and Young Thurnhani. Maunga stayed on too well for the others and his fencing was good, although he nearly blundered once. Fubriano fell after going once round and Brigadier Bill, who jumped badly, was pulled up. Glcndowio went better than on the opening day. Itadiaie failed to stay. In a great letting raco Taboo, Sudden Storm and Black Duke wero best backed for the Onslow Handicap. Oration, Marblo King, Kaiti and Billikins wero the leaders into the straight. Once in line for home Marble King came through on tho rails and won easily by four lengths from Taboo, who cut Kaiti out of second place by a head. Billikins and Tchcka were almost in line next. Marblo King improved slightly on his previous form and won handsomely. Taboo came from a long way back and so did Tchcka. Fancies took a wide rango in tho Ivia Ora Handicap and there was most money for Kolaki Eka and Mark Mint. Tho race was run in semi-darkness and it was impossible to pick up tho colours early. Lucky Bag led into the straight and won comfortably by four lengths from Tarunto, who beat Kotaki Eka by threo lengths. Hoywood was fourth, followed by Mangaharci, Mark Mint and Loving Cup.
