SUIT TAKEN FROM SHOP. MAN SENT TO PRISON. "Ho was seen in tho act," said SubInspector McCarthy, when Alexander Gamble, aged 57, a waterside worker, was charged in tho Polico Court on Saturday with the theft of a suit of clothes, valued at £3 9s 6d, the property of Moltzer Brothers. Accused denied tho offence.

An assistant in Meltzer Brothers' shop, William Ryan, stated that early on Friday evening when ho was standing outside the shop in Victoria Street ho saw accused go in and tako tho suit off a peg. After Constablo Sherson had stated that accused was under tho influence of liquor at tho limo, accused said ho was going down Victoria Street when Mr. Meltzer spoko to him, telling him to move on or ho would "put him up." "You say ho has told a story to get you in trouble?" asked tho magistrate, Mr F. K Hunt. "Well, 1 do not boliovo it."

Sentence of one month's imprisonment was passed Charges of being drunk in Karangaliapo Road, assaulting Harry Foreman and committing a breach of his prohibition order wero preferred against Archibald Chester, aged 28, a miner, of Westport, who pleaded guilty to all three offences. Mr. McCarthy said tho assault was fairly serious. Accused, who was drunk, had entered a tea-shop in Katangahapo Road, where ho had created a disturbance, Foreman went to call a constable, with whom ho returned, and when lie on mo back accused struck lum heavily. Mr. McCarthy said there was a warrant issued for accused on a further charge. Accused was remanded for a week for sentence.
