CRASH OVER A BANK.

AMMUNITION CART'S DIVE. A REMARKABLE ESCAPE. Two Shorneliffo soldiers had a marvellous escape from death when tlio oneton horse-drawn waggon in which thoy were l'iding got out of control on Dover Hill, one of the longest and steepest hills in Kent, on May 29 and dashed over a 40ft. bank.

They were Corporal Campbell and 11 ivate Mcßrearty, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and they were driving a waggon loaded with livo ammunition from Dover to Sliorncliffe. On Dover Hill tho brakes failed and tho horses and waggon went plunging down tho hill at great speed. An awkward bend had been safely negotiated when tho waggon swerved and went dashing through high railings and down a 40ft. bank. Corporal Campbell and Private McBrearty were flung out. of tho waggon. The vehicle went on, flattened out a row of bushes and eventually pinned down one of the horses, while the other got clear.

Drivers of cars travelling up and down Dover Hill rushed to the soldiers' assistance, expecting to find then) seriously hurt, but both men escaped with cuts and bruises. The horse pinned beneath the waggon was severely injured. Attempts to set. it free, were fruitless and it was eventually shot. , The ammunition which the waggon contained was flung in all directions, but pone exploded.
