COLLECTION OF FINE.
COURT'S LATEST ACTION.
THE CASE OF A. MILLER.
ATTACHMENT ORDER ISSUED
Tito warrants lor the arrest of the two j Presbyterian theological students, Alan Morgan Richards and Alcxandei Miller, who refused to pay the fines imposed jipon I hem by Mr. F K. Hunt. S.M . for failure to attend drill, had not been executed yesterday Instead, the Magistrate's Court has issued an attachment order against Miller's employers for the payment into Court ol 15s a week until the fine and costs, amounting to £5 13s. have been paid. The sentence of the Court was a fine of £5 in each case, in default two weeks imprisonment. Both men, having do clined to pay the fine, would, in the, ordinary course of events, have gone to prison The action of the Court in issuing an attachment order alters the position in the case of Miller, whose employers, now automatically become liable for the collection of the fine. Authority for this action is obtained under section 11 of the Defence Amend I nient Act, 1912, which provides for the issue, on the application of any person, o! an attachment order against an ! offender's employer, stipulating that "the fine shall, bv way of .vctkly payments ioi such amount as' the magistrate or I justices may think fit, be a charge on I any salary or wages which from time to j time become due and payable by the j employer to the offender."
N'o order of this nature has been issued in the case of Richards, as he is a fulltime student and is not in employment.
